Located right on the Maldon docks, you’ll be dining on a fine old sailing barge which began her life back in 1906. Take in the historic sights onboard the top deck before ascending the ship’s lower deck to dine in a truly unique and intimate space. Whether you’re a merry maiden or fancy yourself a skipper, our supper club is nothing short of a fantastical lobster feast!
Treat your taste buds to a variety of delicious lobster and seafood dishes prepared for you by our talented ship skivvies to warn away the scurvy. Behind all the debauchery and mischief, there’ll be an abundance of rum to wet your whistle - the finest of all rum to fuel the highest of spirits - as well as a selection of homegrown liquors.

ABOUT YOUR SHIP: S.B. HYDROGEN (1906)
In 1906 the Hydrogen slipped down the ways at the yard of Gills in Rochester. At 94’ long and 22’ wide she was a fine example of a mulie rigged coasting barge, capable of carrying 200 tons of cargo.
Her working life began with her carrying tar and oil from the Thames and Medway to Scotland.
In 1912 the respected racing skipper Arthur Coward was offered shares in her and became her skipper, a position he held for 20 years. The barge was converted to general cargo with her oil tanks removed and traded regularly to the Humber, once making the passage from Spurn Head to Kent in 24 hours.
The Hydrogen continued her coastal trading under the flag of G F Sully and spent the war years working for the War Department on the Firth of Clyde.
She continued to carry cargo until 1976, but latterly, as engines replaced sail, purely as a motor barge.
In 1977 she took part in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration on the Thames.
In 1978 she was sold to Bells Whisky for promotional work and her new owners returned her to sail. She regularly sailed around the UK Coast and became a well-known visitor entertaining guests at many ports en-route.
In 1992 the Hydrogen was bought by The Blackwater Barge Co Ltd and since then has been one of Topsail Charters fleet of Thames barges, her current “cargo” of passengers helping to fund her continued survival into the future as the largest wooden barge still sailing. She has attended the Brest Festival, the Tall Ships races and circumnavigated Britain. In 2012 she represented Essex at the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations on the Thames.
